Introduction to Fax Repair

This information has been compiled primarily for individuals interested in learning basic fax machine repair or fax troubleshooting. When working on a wide variety of facsimile equipment, technicians are always on the lookout for resources and we hope to provide quite a few. Also, we occassionally conduct informal seminars for IT departments in large corporations ... this information summarizes the topics of our training seminar.

The fax machine is a modern day wonder that transmits the printed page over telephone lines for the same cost as a phone call. The fax machine is basically a telephone, an answering device, scanner, and printer. If you think about it in these terms, it is fairly simple to understand.

When you transmit a document, the fax machine dials the number, the other machine answers, they screech at each other (the handshake), they decide if they are talking the same language, determine if they can hear each other, and then they talk to each other. The result is a printed page on the receiving machine.

When you receive a fax, the phone rings, the fax machine answers, it hears the tones generated by the sending machine, and it sends back its own tone (the handshake). If they are talking the same language, it receives the transmission and prints the image.

The first fax machines used pens and pulleys transcribe the images. Later they used a thermal print head with thermal recording paper to print the image. Today they use thermal recording paper, thermal transfer, ink jet, laser emitting diodes, and pure laser technology to print images.
